Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicinescalled Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.
Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (also known as androgeneticalopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss inmen. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from usingPropecia.
How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

The length of this cycle is called the telogen. Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It stops the conversion ofDHT (dihydrotestosterone) to D2EDT (finasteride 2, 5-trihydrotestosterone) in the body. DHT is a male hormone that contributes to the miniaturisation of the scalp (hardening of the scalp). This increases the levels of DHT in the body and consequently reduces scalp hair loss. Finasteride 2, 5-trihydrotestosterone are both 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
Finasteride can be taken with or without food. When taken at the start of a men's................................ or after a.................... or after a meal, it is recommended to take a tablet at the same time every day as this will reduce the effect of DHT. It is very important that this tablet be taken at the same time each day and this will help to maintain proper blood levels of DHT. It is a good idea to take this medicine at about the same time every day, even if you feel well. If you have trouble taking your dose see your GP or pharmacist.
The normal daily dose of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors is one tablet per day.
Finasteride can also be taken before, during, and after a meal to reduce the chance of side effects. It is usually taken once a day. You should follow your pharmacist's instructions about the dosage and how long to take your medicine. Swallow your tablet whole with a drink of water.
Finasteride is not indicated in women.
How should I take Finasteride?
The recommended dose of finasteride tablets is one tablet per day.
In a new study published in, a French research team reported that patients who were taking a prescription drug for male pattern baldness had a significantly lower risk of developing an enlarged prostate than those who were not taking the medication.
Researchers from the University of Paris-Lunard and the French Research Institute for Cancer Control in France reported in the journalPharmacogeneticsthat the lower risk of developing an enlarged prostate was due to a higher dosage of finasteride (Propecia) compared to the placebo. Finasteride has been shown to increase the risk of prostate cancer, though it doesn’t appear to be as associated with other cancer types as finasteride.
Finasteride was originally developed as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Although it was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1997, it was removed from the market in 2004 due to safety concerns.
In France, Propecia and finasteride were combined as an approved drug in 1997 to treat male pattern baldness. This combination was only licensed for men with a prostate cancer risk of more than 10%.
Finasteride is only available in the US.
In France, finasteride was not approved for use in men with prostate cancer. However, it was approved by the FDA in 2003 to treat male pattern baldness in the US. Finasteride is not as effective as the other treatments currently available in the US.
In the new study, the team of French researchers looked at data from a large Canadian population-based cancer center and found that patients who were taking finasteride for male pattern baldness had a significantly lower risk of developing an enlarged prostate than patients who were not taking the medication. They found that patients who were taking finasteride for male pattern baldness had a significantly lower risk of developing an enlarged prostate than those who were not taking the medication.
Finasteride is a medication commonly used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. While finasteride is available in the US, it can also be prescribed off-label to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia in men.
Finasteride has been approved for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia for several decades. However, it is currently only approved for use in men with a prostate cancer risk of at least 10%. Finasteride has not been approved for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
The researchers looked at data from the French National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (ANFDA) for finasteride (Propecia) and found that the incidence of prostate cancer was lower in the group taking finasteride compared to the group who were not taking the medication. They also found that a lower dosage of finasteride was associated with a significantly lower risk of prostate cancer.
The study looked at a total of 1,976 male and women with prostate cancer who had been prescribed finasteride, or a combination of finasteride and the medication. The study involved over 1,000 men who were followed from their initial consultation to a year or more after starting the medication. Finasteride and the medication were taken twice daily.
Finasteride has been proven to be a very safe and effective treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. It was originally developed as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia and now has been approved for the treatment of male pattern baldness.
The researchers noted that the higher incidence of prostate cancer among the finasteride users was due to the combination of the two medications.
“The increased risk of prostate cancer observed in the study suggests that finasteride may be a potential treatment option for men with benign prostatic hyperplasia who have not been prescribed finasteride,” the researchers concluded. “Further research is needed to confirm this finding and to further explore the impact of finasteride on prostate cancer risk in men who have been prescribed finasteride for male pattern baldness.”
The researchers reported that the study was “an open-label, randomized, placebo-controlled, single-blind trial” which allowed them to compare the safety and efficacy of the two medications on male pattern baldness. They also noted that the incidence of prostate cancer was lower in the finasteride users compared to the placebo users.
In addition, the team of French researchers said that they did not have data on the side effects of finasteride, as their analysis involved only women. The research was conducted under the supervision of a team of researchers in French clinical trials.
Finasteride is used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), such as frequent and difficult urination. Besides this, it is also used to treat male pattern hair loss.
Finasteride contains Finasteride, which works by blocking the action of male hormones that cause prostate enlargement and hair loss. Thereby, it helps treat BPH and male pattern hair loss.
In some cases, Finasteride may cause low sexual desire, impotence (erectile dysfunction), abnormal ejaculation, or trouble having an orgasm. Most of these side effects of Finasteride may not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.
Do not take Finasteride if you are allergic to any of its components. Finasteride is not intended for use in women and children. Keep the doctor informed about your health condition and medications to rule out any side effects/interactions.
Treatment of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and male pattern hair loss.
Finasteride belongs to a class of medicines called 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) in men with enlarged prostate. It also may decrease the need for prostate surgery. Additionally, it is also used to treat male pattern hair loss. Finasteride works by blocking the action of male hormones that cause the prostate to enlarge and hair loss.

Finasteride is the generic form of Propecia, used to treat hair loss in men. The drug works by preventing the growth of finasteride-type hair follicles and therefore the loss of hair. This also stops the growth of hair loss-related side effects like prostate problems and a low back pain. Finasteride is also used to treat male pattern blood vessels blocked by finasteride tablets. This medication is used for two reasons- it stops hair loss and it reduces the amount of free testosterone present in the scalp.
